Linda Gendall
I grew up in rural Montana living on remote ranger stations. We later lived adjacent to the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. The sights and sounds of this time in my life indelibly influenced me and charted, in large part, my path through life.
My father took me on horseback into the natural world and taught me the secrets and science of all we saw. My memories of the plants, animals, light, texture, and colors are an integral part of me to this day.
I taught elementary education in many places and I loved those years of being with young children. I taught art history to these young students. The students knew no boundaries and produced wonderful pieces of art.
We moved to the Mesilla Valley in 2002 where I discovered the unique culture of the border area and the brilliant light of the Southwest. I took a painting workshop from the Painters Guild and once I sniffed that oil paint, I was hooked! In 2005, I started painting in my own studio. In the years after that, my passion for oil painting blossomed! I am continually fascinated with the play of light and color, of reflections and shadows. My life in the border region is a continual inspiration.
In 2020, I started painting on Corten Steel. I got some information about the steel, some basic processes and started in on a new path. I use oil paint on the steel and when the paint is dry, I use a special patina to cause all unpainted areas to rust. Often, I use the patina several times to cause a rich dark rust. I learned a lot working, quietly, by myself during Covid. I will continue to spend time between canvas and steel.
I have made painting time in my studio the most important part of my day. Not long ago I found a statement by an unknown person: Many of us go to our graves with our music still inside us! I celebrate my music every day!!!
